Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians also called physiatrist are specialists who have completed a training program (residency) in the specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and may be subspecialty certified in Brain Injury Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Neuromuscular Medicine, Pain Medicine, Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine, Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, and/or Sports Medicine.  The physiatrist treats patient of all ages and focuses on the entire person with the aim of increasing function quality of life.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry or rehabilitation medicine, is a subspecialty of medicine that works with the individual in an attempt to restore and or increase the functional capacity and quality of life to those experiencing physical or cognitive impairments or disabilities. This specialty addresses the musculoskeletal and nervous systems and provides training in recognizing and diagnosing conditions.  This specialty applies skills from physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy as well as utilizing assistive devices to help the individual achieve maximize functional potential and quality of life.
